Thompson, CT — As the cold chill of last week’s arctic blast began to fade, the stars of the Thompson highbanks gathered on Saturday at the Speedway Clubhouse to celebrate the 2024 season. All five track champions were on hand to celebrate their stellar seasons as were a pair of top Rookies and a collection of other top-ten point chasers from the past year.
The biggest scuttlebutt from Saturday’s banquet was a shifting Late Model division for 2025. Mini Stock champion Jared Roy made it known he had purchased an ACT Late Model already this off season, leaving the door wide-open for Ryan Pomposelli, Kevin Moore and others to make a run at the four-cylinder championship in 2025. The AZ Roofing SK Light Modified Champion Tyler Chapman also stated he will be taking on the driving role in an undisclosed Late Model on the Thompson highbanks next season, leaving the SK Lights to Meghan Fuller, John O’Sullivan and more!
Reigning Late Model track champion Nick Johnson also reported to the capacity crowd on hand that he will be stepping away from racing this season with family and business commitments coming to the forefront for the Rehoboth, Massachusetts hot shoe.
Inaugural Thompson Sunoco 604 Modified champion Jon Puleo stated it was his intention to defend the crown in the Mr. Rooter #7 machine while Danielson’s Ryan Waterman made similar sentiments for his Street Stock crown after a popular, close-shave championship earned on Sunoco World Series weekend.
Baltic’s Kyle Gero was on hand to accept his Late Model Rookie of the Year honors while Warwick, Rhode Island’s Austin Flanagan accepted his rookie laurels for his first Street Stock campaign at Thompson. Not to be overshadowed, the excitement surrounding the new Thunderstock Crown Vic division was also the talk of the Banquet of Champions with several drivers discussing building faithful machines for a run, or two, of fun!
The ‘Quiet Corner of Connecticut’ will roar to life after a deep winter’s sleep on March 29 and 30 for the 51st Icebreaker Weekend at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. Following the practice day shake-down on Friday, March 28, the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series headlines Day #1 of Icebreaker Weekend alongside the Pro All Stars Series Super Late Models, Evolve Bank Pro Truck Challenge, R&R Street Stocks, Mini Stocks and the debut of the Thunderstock Crown Vics!
The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Icebreaker 150 headlines Day #2 for the start of the FloRacing Connecticut Challenge alongside the Late Models, Street Stocks and SK Light Modifieds. The Thompson Sunoco Modifieds will take on both days of Icebreaker Weekend!
